Creel was established as a railroad station in 1907, this village has a population of approximately 6500 people, it served as commercial center for a large but remote area. Forest and tourism are important activities. At more than 7,700 feet (2836m), Creel is the center of the tarahumara homeland.

Home for centuries to the Tarahumara Indians, Copper Canyon is an outstanding opportunity for the study of ancient cultures Tarahumara women are excellent basket weavers and display and sell their handicraft at most of the train stops and hotels. Their dress is very colorful and lends to the atmosphere of this beautiful place.
