There are basically two "entrances" to the Copper Canyon. Visitors can come from the western end of the canyons departing from either Los Mochis or El Fuerte via the Chihuahua al Pacifico train. Or the other option is to come from the eastern end of the canyons and the town of Creel by driving or taking the train from Chihuahua. You can not drive from Creel to Los Mochis.

By Air
Flying, and then driving, into Mexico to visit the Copper Canyon is the easiest choice.

Chihuahua (CUU) has an international airport just 15 minutes from the capital's downtown. Airlines that serve the city include Aeromexico, Aerolitoral, Aeroalifornia, American Airlines y Continental.

Los Mochis' international airport (LMM) is served by AeroCalifornia, Aerolitoral, and two local airlines from Los Cabos to Los Mochis, AeroPacífico and AeroCalafia.

By Car (Click here to see map)
If you are driving to Mexico, there are a few laws and regulations you must follow. First, and most important, is Mexican auto insurance. Anyone driving in Mexico must have Mexican auto insurance, it is the law. U.S., Canadian and other nations insurance policies do not cover you or your car driving in Mexico. You can purchase insurance at the border, by phone, or on the internet.

If you drive your car, you must also purchase a bond (temporary import permit) on your vehicle at the border customs station in Mexico. You must leave a credit card (not check card) number for a deposit stating that you will not sell the car in Mexico. You will also need a valid drivers license.

You will need a Tourist Visa to enter Mexico beyond the border zone. You can purchase it at a Mexican customs station at the border. You will need a valid passport or a birth certificate, which has been notarized, plus photo ID for the Tourist Visa.

By Bus
Buses in Mexico run daily throughout the nation including connections from the border cities. First class buses are available both to Chihuahua City and Los Mochis with regular buses connecting to Creel or El Fuerte. Bus travel in Mexico is very easy, comfortable and inexpensive.
